Plastics that can be welded are called “thermoplastics” meaning that when heated to a sufficiently high temperature, they will soften and therefore can be welded. One of the most common type of thermoplastics is polyethylene.
When heated with low heat hot air, the surface of polyethylene foam actually melts for a short period of time. So by melting two pieces simultaneously and then joining them, an unbreakable bond is created as the foam is now “fused” together. In this process we utilize a heat gun to melt the surface of the substrates and then bond them together with pressure while they are still hot.
